Editorial Standards

Every recommendation on HotAirTag comes from hands-on testing. This page explains how we pick products, how we test them, and how we keep our reviews honest.

How We Select Products

We cover trackers that real people actually consider buying. Selection criteria:

  • Market availability — the product must be purchasable on Amazon or directly from the manufacturer
  • Reader demand — we prioritize trackers that appear in search queries, reader emails, and Reddit discussions
  • Category gaps — if a tracker category (e.g., wallet cards, pet GPS) lacks a thorough independent comparison, we fill it

We buy every product at retail price. No manufacturer has ever sent us a free unit, and we do not accept pre-release review samples.

How We Test

Testing varies by product type, but every tracker goes through a minimum protocol:

Bluetooth Trackers
  • Indoor range test (through walls, floors, furniture)
  • Outdoor range test (open field, parking lot)
  • UWB Precision Finding distance and accuracy (if supported)
  • Speaker volume comparison at 1 meter
  • Battery life tracking over 30+ days
  • App setup time and usability
  • Network crowd-source reliability in urban and suburban areas
GPS Trackers
  • Location accuracy (cross-referenced with phone GPS)
  • Update interval consistency (real-time vs. claimed)
  • Battery life under daily tracking
  • Geofence alert latency
  • Cellular coverage in suburban and rural areas
  • App notification reliability
  • Total cost of ownership over 12 and 24 months

For comparison articles, we test competing products side by side in the same environment on the same day to minimize variables.

How We Score

We do not use numerical scores. Instead, we provide context-specific recommendations: the right tracker depends on your phone, your use case, and your budget. Every article includes a "Choose X if..." decision framework so you can match our findings to your situation.

When we name a "Top Pick" or "Best Value," that badge reflects our genuine assessment after testing, not a paid placement.

How We Handle Affiliate Links

Some articles contain affiliate links to Amazon. When you purchase through these links, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This is how we fund the site.

Affiliate relationships never determine which products we recommend or how we rank them. We regularly recommend products with lower commission rates over higher-commission alternatives when the product is simply better. We also recommend products available only through manufacturer websites where we earn nothing.

Every article with affiliate links includes a disclosure statement at the top.

How We Update Content

Tracker technology and pricing change frequently. Our update policy:

  • Price checks — verified before publish and on major updates
  • Product availability — discontinued products are flagged and alternatives suggested
  • New product launches — existing comparison articles are updated when a significant new competitor launches
  • Reader corrections — factual errors reported by readers are fixed within 48 hours

Updated articles display an "Updated" date in the byline. The original publication date is preserved in the page metadata.

Editorial Independence

No manufacturer, retailer, or advertiser has editorial input on our content. Specifically:

  • No company has reviewed or approved any article before publication
  • No company has paid for placement in our comparison articles
  • We do not accept sponsored posts or paid reviews
  • We do not participate in affiliate networks that require positive coverage
